In typical Brandon Shire form the writing is superb. In typical Brandon Shire form the dudes are very steamy. Not so typical is the gritty edge this story has. These guys are bad, maybe even deplorable, but that's what this is all about--loving to hate the wickedness.Before I had even settled in, my head was whipped around with an out-of-nowhere plot twist. I did not see that coming and I think it's just a precursor of what to expect.
THE CHARACTERS
Sid - If you don't despise him right off I'd be surprised. Still...
Jack - He's still something of a mystery, but there's no doubt he's savvy and sexy.
THE STORY
This serialized erotic fiction focuses on Sid's law practice and his questionable methods. He also scratches a few itches that will probably make your skin crawl. For me though, I couldn't look away.
THE WRITING
As I said earlier, the writing is spot on. Shire's no fluff delivery is perfect for the nature of this story and I can almost guarantee a gasp, a grrrr and a unnnnhh or two.
Remember though, this is about corruption, bad boys and every man for himself. If you're looking for fluff, sweetness or tenderness look elsewhere.
As both a beta reader for this book and a moderator for Mr. Shire's Goodreads Fan Group I have become intimate with Sid and Jack--although there is still much to learn about Jack.

Sid Rivers is a successful corporate lawyer in a mid-sized southern city. Sid’s forté seems to be using barely legal means to scare off plaintiffs before they even get to trial. He’s a true shark whose only real lusts are money and power. Even when it comes to sex, Sid is a real predator. He picks up rent boys or any young man that piques his interest, then tosses them aside once he has sated his lust. He doesn’t need a relationship. He doesn’t have time for one.
When we first meet Jack Brown, he appears to be on the other side of the law, a small time hood that Sid encounters while he’s holding up a convenience store. However, we soon learn Jack isn’t what he appears to be. He’s a man on a mission, and Sid — a man who represents everything Jack has come to despise — is the one he thinks will lead him to his goal.
It’s a bit tricky reviewing serial installments, which are the latest trend in ebooks (although it’s really a return to the way many books were published in the nineteenth century). With these first two episodes, things are really just beginning to come together as we get to know the main characters and the foundations of the plot are laid. Sid and Jack really are two sides of the same coin. Sid may be the more obviously morally bankrupt, but Jack is proving to be almost as ruthless in his own pursuit. Both men are trying to use each other to get what they want. That they’ll somehow end up together seems inevitable, but how that’s going to be pulled off is far from clear. Even the author claims he doesn’t know how this will end.
So, the bottom line at this point is, is this a series you might want to commit to? The first episode definitely has a good hook, giving us a hint of what the plot line is going to be, without tipping off too much of how it will play out, which is a good sign. The second installment filled out a lot of the secondary characters and leaves us with a good idea of what the main plot line is. You’ll most likely have enough at this point to be interested in knowing how it will end.
These are two of the grittiest, most raw, realistic characters I have come across in a long time. The extremely realistic portrayal of the dark underbelly of real life business is so good that it's actually frightening. I could not put this book down, I was sucked in and it didn't let go. Heck, it still hasn't let go, it's staying with me and I want more.
Sid and Jack are two of the darkest characters I've had the pleasure of reading in a while and it certainly doesn't help that they're hot men that know what they want and aren't afraid to get it, all else be damned. All of the characters are extremely well written and there are so many layers yet to explore in them! I can't wait to see how the other characters, some just as dark, or darker than Jack and Sid, play out, and I certainly can't wait until Jack and Syd 'have their moment' !!!!
I am so glad I went in for a 'serial' and then again I'm not because I now have to wait for the next one, but such extremely delicious waiting!
