The design, the photography, the recipes, the friendly text... no doubt it is another winner, especially with the TV series of the same name about to kick off." - Graham Beattie, Beattie's Book Blog

What a wonderful find! I am addicted to cooking TV shows and found Annabel one day while browsing...I loved it! I immediately went online to investigate and bought this book. It just arrived today so therefore I can't comment on the recipes just yet (but I will after Christmas), but I can tell you it is a beautifully presented book from cover to cover. It is organized and easy to read, and inside the covers I see some of the recipes that are now showing on the TV series of the same name that drew me in. Inside the book on page 8 is an introduction worth reading. It states that the recipes are all assumed to use convection temps, and if you must use regular bake, add 20 degrees F, and increase cooking time by 10-15%. My oven allows both convection and regular bake, but if it didn't, it would be just fine bc all ovens vary anyway. The recipes give measurements in cups and ounces, but in the back of book is a conversion chart if you want to change cups to milligrams...which I do like to do when baking with flour...I find weight measurements for baking more reliable. Some recipes include the bar codes on the page so you can scan it with your smartphone should you be so inclined in order to see the video of the recipe attached to it.

I have many pages tagged to try. Lots of healthy veggie dishes, with and without grains, pastas, and nice condiments that are novel and so simple--some so simple in fact that it seems odd I've never seen them out there even though I have a huge collection of cookbooks. This is what I find so 'refreshing' about Annabel's recipes and her cooking style. It's not the same old same old. Her recipes cross all cultures from Asian, Mexican, Moroccan, Italian, French, etc...very varied. They are all appealing to me and very approachable. I will report back when I try some out.
UPDATE: I made the "birdseed bars", and these were easy and healthy and perfect for my g'daughter who is allergic to nuts As the name implies, this uses SEEDS--pumpkin, sunflower, etc...it uses dried fruit, any kind will do, and peanut butter too, but I substituted 'sunbutter' made from sunflower seeds. These bars were such a hit, that my DIL copied the page from my cookbook and made them herself. She says my g'daughter eats them from her lunchbox whereas before she didn't each lunch very much. You can buy allergen free 'anything' from www.MyGerbs.com. I mention this since many seeds in the marketplace have disclaimers about NOT being manufactured in a nut-free factory.

I am going to make a few simple veggie dishes next from her book, as I'm recuperating from surgery and need to curb my enthusiasm and not work too hard right now!

The Free Range Cook Simple Pleasures Annabel Langbein 9780958266864 Books Reviews

Followed the live series , so glad to have recipes at hand. However, the print is so faint it's nearly hopeless to follow along using the book while you cook/bake. Only tried two recipes so far. The chicken/leeks.. didn't have the dried bread, so I used some Panko that I browned first. It was very good.
I purchased this book after watching Annabel's PBS cooking show. Loved the show. The book is beautifully done with photography and text. Her recipes use yummy fresh ingredients and are beautiful and promise to be tasty. I was glad that she has a wide variety of dishes and the menus to combine entrees and sides. Her use of fresh foods that can often be used straight from the garden and orchard which we have, was the main reason I purchased one book for myself and one for a gift. The ingredients can be somewhat pricey but look to be worth it. I felt the book was a little more expensive than I wished, but it is all that was promised.
Quite honestly, Annabel's cooking book was the only book which literally drew me in, after watching her "Simple Pleasures" on PBS. Upon receiving this book, IT MORE THAN MET MY EXPECTATIONS - QUALITY ALL ROUND, I must say, from the higher end photos, quality of heavy paper utilized, format, how the book "flows" from recipe to recipe, to Annabel's "personalization" in the manner in which the recipes are written, an easy-to-follow format, with Annabel's personal comments blended in. (I found I even prefer the script type, and as to format, how Annabel marries an entire meal with completeness and harmony - like the Bang Bang Chicken and the Ginger Mule...THE GREATEST COOKING BOOK I'VE EVER COME ACROSS AND ENDEAVORED AS A MUST HAVE! A deep thank you, Annabel, may you continue your gift of bringing to people the knowledge and understanding of simple, but superb eating!!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ANY AND ALL.
Langbein makes cooking simple and the recipes are varied. One problem, and for people such as my wife and me, the ink for the ingredients is a very light green (I think) and in some other areas, there is occasionally white on green, all of which makes it difficult to read. This should be changed in future editions. The Free Range Cook Simple Pleasures
Wow-Wow-Wow...I have been following Annabel Langbein on my local PBS station for quite awhile. I have made several of her recipes from her show. They are always huge hits. This book is truly spectacular. The photos are so elegant and the scenery is exquisite. The recipes are amazing and the book is so well written and designed. Such beautiful ideas for presentations. I rarely have time to read but I made time to read this on receipt-for hours!!! This is without question, the Olympics of Cookbooks. Thank you Annabel and . You made my day and beyond. I will be making more of these recipes within the week!!!
Every cookbook should be this well done. Everything from the TV series is here. Every recipe has photos (A Must!). The QR codes are a very nice addition - the videos let you watch her do it. If only every recipe had a video... Maybe next time. The book is well bound, lies flat when open. and has 2 ribbon bookmarks (evenly spaced) bound in to keep your place.

As for the content - these are very workable recipes. You don't need a lot of experience, fancy ingredients, or expensive equipment to make them. All of the meals appear colorful and tasty and many of the recipes can be made ahead. There's a lot of help here if you are trying to stop eating pre-packaged food and get back to (or learn about) making real meals using fresh ingredients.

No pretense, no nonsense, just straight-forward home cooking.
