I should have done more research. While Newman's ideas and writing are insightful and enriching, this is just a small and oddly-selected sanpling of his lectures on the aims and theory of university education. This book was required reading before I went off to university as a freshman, and I was surprised by its liberality since it had been penned by a Catholic prelate. I ordered it now since it has been many years since I reviewed the book in the summer of 1968. Parents who intend to enroll their children at Religious Right wackjob wingnut schools such as Liberty University would do well to read this book and then to reconsider as we approach Year 1 A.T. (anno trumpi).
An intellectually honest and brilliant writer, he foresaw the disaster of leftist ideological indoctrination that masquerades as contemporary higher education . He gives the tools to counter cant and propaganda.
Still chewing on this book after all this time...deep in its motivation....challenging in what to do about it.
Prior to reading this tasty work I had no idea Cardinal Newman was so prescient, such a brilliant intellect. As one reads, one has a new appreciation for the cultural drift that has harmed our society.
Great, great book. The ideas that Newman discusses have definitely shaped our universities and need to continue to shape our universities. This is a classic book for those asking, "How should one do education?"
Very interesting in order to understand the Catholic point of view of the university by a great thinker. Although he speaks from his priesthood character, his opinions are useful for many non believers. The language was a little difficult for me (non native english speaker).
It was a great book and the ideas expressed are important and critical ideas to all of Christian faith and I think is an extremely amazing book. The context is applicable and very easy to see the value of. Highly recommend this book!
